Ways to Declutter Your Life

9:00 AM

Late last year, I made a decision to declutter my life. Maybe it has something to do with tons of article about simplifying life. The trend is minimalist living and i hope it sticks. Anyway, after reading about the concept of Capsule Wardrobe (read about it here) it got me thinking on more ways to simplify life - declutter it if you will.

I've found that in today's world of smart phones and internet, social media sites reign supreme. These sites took up most of my time. Half of the time, i end up being this mean, judgmental person. I know, I know. What right do i have? But believe you me when i say that half the things on my feed are for lack of a better word, crap. Most i can't relate to. Most i can't find any use for. I don't know.. maybe I've outgrown it or maybe I've just realized to better value my time. With that, i give you - ways to declutter your (digital) life.

1. Go on a Social Media Sabbatical.

Late last year i decided to take a one-month hiatus from Facebook that turned into two months. Without it, i had more time on my hands to do other stuff. Work on my blog for one. I also used this time to check if i actually will miss being on Facebook. I didn't. So after the hiatus, i decided to go on Facebook only when it mattered. My birthday for instance. Haha! Now i log in to check my notifications maybe once a week. Maybe. And i don't regret it at all. Try this with social media accounts that you think you spend most of your time on.

2. Set a Limit.

After figuring out which of these you would like to keep, it's now time to set a limit on how much time you would actually spend on it. This allows you to allocate your time to things that matter - like those goals you've set in 2014 which you planned out in 2015 and vowed to actually accomplish this 2016. With your time limited on those social media sites, those goals are not farfetched. You can make it happen.

3. Curate your newsfeed.

Have you ever gone on any of your social media accounts and find yourself frowning more and more as you scroll further down? A lot of people nowadays find the need to overshare and it could get overwhelming for the receiving end. These people can benefit from a little 101 on social media etiquette. I have full respect for their right to post anything and whatever floats their boat but flooding people's feed with selfies all in a span of... Oh i don't know, one hour? Can be a bit much don't you think? Then again, that's their account. No qualms here. The next best thing? Curate your newsfeed.

  • Identify the purpose of these accounts. I use Instagram as a source of inspiration so i prefer to follow profiles that really interest me and instill positive vibes. Pinterest i use for visual planning and food oggling. While Twitter is my source of news and updates so i follow journalists, influencers, traffic resources, etc.
  • Be selective of the people you follow so you see content that matter to you. I'm a firm believer that if you genuinely want to know more about someone's life, you would reach out and talk to the person (if you don't already). On Facebook there's an option to follow or unfollow a friend. This feature allows you to select who you want to be updated on without having to deal with people asking you why you've unfriended them and content that you are better off without.

There you have it. I hope this helps.
If you've already decluttered your life, I'd love to hear how you did it!

Hugs & Besos!
